• • Inside the list
Jennifer Schuessler, New York Times The Fountainhead  Personal life  Information on books on the NYT best-sellers lists, including T. C. Boyle’s novel, The Women. When a critic panned the interiors in the movie version of “The Fountainhead,” [Frank Lloyd] Wright (who had initially wanted the commission) responded with a blistering telegram: “Any move I would make against such grossly abusive caricature of my work by this film crew would only serve their purpose. They belie the one decent thesis of ‘The Fountainhead,’ the inalienable right of the individual to the integrity of his idea. It is best to laugh.”

• • Free market should rule
Chris McKenzie, Greenville News (SC) Capitalism  Letter to the editor.I read with great interest the recent letter "Objectivism hasn't worked." Wouldn't it have to have been tried first? The writer overlooks the fact that the U.S. economy can hardly be called "free-market" in any sense of the term. [....] In laissez-faire capitalism, such as that advocated by Ayn Rand and objectivists, organizations would succeed or fail according to the market.

• • BB&T’s Allison: A free market could have prevented this
Laurie Kulikowski, TheStreet.com Atlas Shrugged  Capitalism  [John] Allison's philosophy is greatly influenced by Ayn Rand, who laid the foundation for generations of believers in free markets in her novel Atlas Shrugged. Rand was a big proponent of individualism and limited government intervention. The erudite Allison's admiration for Rand has won him both praise and criticism.

Jindal falls and can’t get up
John Brummett, Pahrump Valley Times (NV) Capitalism  I guess [Bobby Jindal would] cut our taxes and give us all an Ayn Rand book.

Obama’s plan is about dreams, not dollars
Will Bunch, Huffington Post Capitalism  Under his Randian, government-is-the-problem philosophy it was a quick and slippery slope from [Ronald] Reagan's so-called sunny optimism to rampant consumerism, to magical thinking that there is plenty of oil and no need for energy research.

 Trivia bits: Test your knowledge
Paul Paquet, Oakland Tribune (CA) What famous woman was born to Albanian parents, under Turkish rule, in what is now Macedonia, but later traveled with a passport from India? A. Sonia Gandhi. B. Marie Curie. C. Ayn Rand. D. Mother Teresa.

• • • The Ayn Rand factor in the Santelli revolt
Robert Tracinski, RealClearMarkets Atlas Shrugged  Capitalism  Objectivist author  It is no coincidence that the strongest resistance to a government takeover of the economy is coming from people influenced by Ayn Rand. She has long functioned as a stiffener of resolve and as the fountainhead of pro-free-market ideas.

• • Player piano
Sam Eldridge, McCook Daily Gazette (NE) Atheism  Atlas Shrugged  The Fountainhead  The left "thinks" they like Ayn Rand because she was an atheist, but they quickly discover that Ayn Rand was a conservative through and through. She brilliantly describes the dangers of following ideology espoused by communists and leftists.

 Capital use of principle
Henry Ergas, The Australian Capitalism  It is [...] absurd to characterise the trend [toward a greater role for markets] as a triumph of right-wing ideology. Many accusations could be levelled at Deng Xiaoping, but being a closet admirer of Ayn Rand is not among them.

• • • We must rejoin the fraternity of selfishness
Mishaal al Gergawi, The National (Abu Dhabi) Atlas Shrugged  The Fountainhead  Capitalism  Egoism  Personal life  These days, academic philosophers tend not to pay much attention to [Ayn Rand's] views. But at a time when calls for nationalism are as loud as the wails of the mourners at the funeral of globalisation, perhaps it’s time the rest of us did.

Thanks for listening to your readers about the comics
Springfield News-Sun (OH) Capitalism  Reader feedback column. So Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, is against the stimulus. What else is new? It was his neo-con Ayn Rand ideals that got us into this mess. He surely isn't going to admit that they may have been wrong

• • • Atlas felt a sense of déjà vu
The Economist Atlas Shrugged  Books do not sell themselves: that is what films are for. “The Reader”, the book that inspired the Oscar-winning film, has shot up the bestseller lists. Another recent publishing success, however, has had more help from Washington, DC, than Hollywood. That book is Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged”.

More than one way to take over a bank
David Leonhardt, New York Times Capitalism  "I understand that once in a hundred years [bank nationalization] is what you do," [Alan] Greenspan, an Ayn Rand disciple before he was a central banker, told The Financial Times.

 Sanction by the victim
Frederick Fisher, Island Gazette (Carolina Beach, NC) Letter to the editor. The Town Council [...] sanction[s] and support[s] [environmentalist Joseph DiBenedetto's] delay tactics. This in what Ayn Rand calls sanction by the victim.

 Alan Greenspan, meet reality
Michael J. Hurd, Capitalism Magazine Capitalism  Objectivist author  Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan recently admitted, when grilled by members of Congress, that his so-called free market philosophy is wrong. This quite naturally was something of a bombshell. Greenspan was originally appointed by President Ronald Reagan and was mentored, in his youth, by none other than the sternest of the free market advocates, Ayn Rand. How did it come to this?

Lima district removes 100 illegal bus stops and advertising panels
Israel Ruiz, Living in Peru Representatives from the municipality of San Isidro in Lima have confirmed that authorities have removed 69 bus stops and 54 advertising panels that were illegally placed in the district. [....] It was reported that the bus stops and panels belong to AYN RAND S.A., a company that is currently not authorized to have them in the district.

Obama’s economic vision reminiscent of Karl Marx’s
Jim Brown, OneNewsNow Atlas Shrugged  Capitalism  [Republican Congressman Paul] Ryan says while Democrats want to impose a more intrusive state -- "something out of an Ayn Rand novel" -- he is proposing an alternative conservative vision that involves "junking the tax code," cutting spending, as well as reforming healthcare, the federal budget, and the regulatory system.

• • Ayn Rand on how statists strangle capitalism
Rush Limbaugh, RushLimbaugh.com Ayn Rand Institute  Capitalism  I want to read something to you that Ayn Rand (or "Ann" Rand, however you wish to pronounce it) wrote in 1975. "[O]ne of the methods used by statists to destroy capitalism consists in establishing controls that tie a given industry hand and foot, making [the industry] unable to solve its problems, then declaring that freedom has failed and stronger controls are necessary." Is that not exactly what is happening to, say, Wall Street?

• • The new Nazis
Phil Burke, Northwest Florida Daily News (Fort Walton Beach, FL) Capitalism  Letter to the editor. To paraphrase Ayn Rand: Every government interference in the economy consists of giving an unearned benefit, extorted by force, to some people at the expense of others.

It’s time for a takeover of feckless U.S. banks
David Olive, Toronto Star Capitalism  Good grief, even Ayn Rand acolyte Alan Greenspan, former chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve, recently allowed that a "temporary" takeover of troubled banks is an option that must be considered.
