Music more than string of notes to Palatine twins

• • Beck and followers merely ranting
,
Atheism  | [Glenn] Beck doesn’t get his beliefs from the gospels. He gets them from the writings of the atheist Ayn Rand. Her basic philosophy is right out of a Dickens novel. You know, if you give Oliver Twist more gruel you will never get a good day of work out of him again. This is the sort of belief that allowed 1 million Irishmen to starve to death when the potato crop failed.

• • • This is a real-life ‘Atlas Shrugged’
,
Atlas Shrugged  | I am nearing the end of a novel that was written in 1957 that is almost scary with regard to how similar the circumstances in the story are with what is happening today. The book is “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand. [....] I understand it is a novel, a fictitious story, but if someone would have told you 10 years ago about the government taking over GM, or the IRS enforcing new health insurance compliance, or billions in new taxes based on faulty global warming science you would have thought it too was science fiction.

• • Video poker won’t solve anything
,
The Daily Herald recently selected a quote from Ayn Rand for its word puzzle, "The upper classes are a nation's past, the middle class is its future." That says a lot about why change is so difficult.

• • Government exists only to protect us
,
Ayn Rand wrote the following, and I say she is the second greatest American behind Washington: "A moral code that urges man to surrender his mind to a higher authority is irreconcilable with the principle that man ought to live his life guided by his own thinking. If obedience is a virtue, freedom of thought and action cannot be a right.”

• • Separation of politics, economics
,
Capitalism  | Letter to the editor.
Our state legislature should pass a constitutional amendment that places a separation between economic and political power similar to the separation in our federal Bill of Rights between religion and politics. This concept is not new. Ayn Rand understood and articulated it long before many of us were born.
