Ayn Rand (1905-1982) was a Russian-American writer and philiosopher. She’s famous for her two novels, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, and creating a new system of philosophy called Objectivism. I didn’t know anything about her before adapting this quote but she seems to have lived a very interesting life. Rand grew up in Russia during the Russian Revolution and later moved to America where she worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood before gaining fame with her first novel, The Fountainhead. After success as a novelist she focused on philosophy and formed a new system called Objectivism, a way of thinking that places reason above everything else. Rand was a strong, out-spoken woman who definitely lived by the words in this quote. — Gavin Aung Than, Zen Pencils #

Categories: Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead, Personal life, Image |

Madeleine George’s “The Difference Between You and Me” takes on a lot (homosexuality, cancer and loss, family, corporate business vs. small towns), but at its core it’s a funny and warm book about a romance between a 15-year-old who accepts who she is and her classmate who has let others’ expectations define her. [....] George sometimes defies character clichés (e.g., Wyatt, Jesse’s gay best friend, worships Ayn Rand instead of Judy Garland), but other times, embraces them: Emily is a pretty girl with problems, and her friends are mean clones. — Chelsey Philpot, Boston Globe #

Categories: |

He says: “I quit when medicine was placed under State control … Do you know the kind of skill it demands, and the years of passionate, merciless, excruciating devotion that go to acquiring that skill [performing brain surgery]? …I would not let them [politicians] dictate the purpose for which my years of study had been spent, or the conditions of my work, or my choice of patients, or the amount of my reward. I observed that in all the discussions that preceded the enslavement of medicine, men discussed everything—except the desires of the doctors. … Let them discover the kind of doctors that their system will now produce. Let them discover, in their operating rooms and hospital wards, that it is not safe to place their lives in the hands of a man whose life they have throttled.
In the United States, in my view it is the Ayn Rand view of entrepreneurship that prevails: entrepreneurs are the ultimate modern heroes of society. And as Steve Jobs once famously stated, their objective is to change the world (at least in their own little niche). They often succeed. It told the story the old-fashioned way, attempting to present Nole as an epic figure, an uncompromising young man overcoming the odds and the critics to make himself into a perfect tennis machine.
Weiss did a fair job of researching Rand and interviewing some key people, such as the Atlas Society’s David Kelley. He also read her major works such as Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead, and The Virtue of Selfishness. As far as I can tell he has not read anything about aesthetics such as the Romantic Manifesto or “The Night of January 16th. This is a shame, as these works contain some very telling information about Ms. Rand’s reason for writing, and therefore studying, philosophy. Overall I’d say he has only a surface understanding of Objectivism and Ayn Rand’s beliefs. There are some basic concepts he seems not to have fully grasped, and the book reveals no research into the subtleties of her beliefs and how they were integrated from top to bottom. Because of his lack of intellectual comprehension, many of the conclusions he draws in Ayn Rand Nation are incorrect. — Victor Sperandeo, Atlas Society #

Categories: Alan Greenspan, Altruism, Atlas Shrugged, Night of January 16th, The Fountainhead, The Romantic Manifesto, The Virtue of Selfishness, Capitalism, Egoism, Personal life, Image, Objectivist author |

Non-objective laws have no defined standards and no consistency in enforcement, and they are designed to create uncertainty. They are rule by man, not rule by law.
The movie is now shooting (digitally, with Arri Alexa cameras) around the Los Angeles area. On Wednesday I visited a giant empty warehouse in downtown Los Angeles (near, naturally, a train track) to witness day 10 of a planned 31 day shoot (slightly longer than Part I’s 27 days, but with a far more leisurely couple of months of pre-production). This warehouse will be Rearden Steel’s foundry and Hank Rearden’s office. In the novel, Rearden invents an amazing amalgam known as Rearden metal only to have his industrial progress hamstrung and his property stolen by an ever-more-repressive state attempting to centrally control an economy already choking under too much government management. — Brian Doherty, Reason #

Categories: Atlas Shrugged movie, Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead, Capitalism, Image |

What, pray tell, are the charges? It would appear that Ayn Rand, one of the greatest libertarian minds as far as I am concerned in the entire history of mankind, is, wait for it; no, you had better be sitting down when you read this or I won’t be responsible for your doctor bills, is, yes, a socialist!
2. Anthem (or anything else by Ayn Rand). Rand is by far the most polarizing author on this list, and “Anthem” is perhaps her least-known work. “Anthem” is very short novella (about ninety pages) set in a dystopian future in which individualism has been completely nullified and the government assumes total control of the people. Each person is given an identifying number and are condemned to monotonous lives dictated by entirely by “the Council.” Slowly, the protagonist, Equality 7-2521, discovers what it means to be human, find love and escape the reigns of collectivism. I suggest reading “Anthem” before moving on to Ayn Rand’s more expansive works. There is not much middle ground with Rand, you’ll likely love her or hate her ideology.
Although most libertarians and classical liberals are champions of human (individual) liberty, the reasons they give vary. Some are utilitarians and hold, along with John Stuart Mill, that when free, men and women are most likely to advance the cause of the greatest happiness of the greatest number; some are Christians and hold that unless the virtuous life is freely chosen, one will not gain (God’s) credit for doing what is right; some hold that human freedom is a precondition of prosperity and progress and other good things. Ayn Rand, the Russian-American novelist-philosopher, has advanced a line of argument in defense of individual liberty that draws a bit on all of these although hers is really a secular version of what the Christians believe. She believed that only free men and women are capable of choosing their conduct and of taking credit for doing so properly or being blameworthy for failing to do so. In other words, Rand argued that human freedom is a necessary precondition for living a morally significant life. This, ironically, is something Rand had in common with Immanuel Kant, a philosopher whose views Rand found offensive. — Tibor Machan, Daily Bell #

Categories: Atlas Shrugged, Individual Rights, Individualism |
